It’s the most wonderful time of the year… Or not? Fall is officially gone, but it’s still a long way to the blissful days of summer. We keep grumbling about long nights, the absence of sun, and the bitter cold weather. We’d like to wish winter away, but all we can do is maintain a positive outlook and cheer ourselves up with simple things. Before the winter blues hits you hard and you have a seasonal meltdown, check out 7 ways to enjoy winter.
1. Rug up.
Winter is a perfect time for wrapping up in layers. Whether you’re snuggling up in blankets or taking part in thrilling winter activities, an extra layer won’t harm you. For a cozy home look, get fluffy pajamas, an oversized ugly Christmas sweater, fuzzy socks, and comfy fleece-lined leggings. An ideal outdoor outfit should include thermals, snow pants, a puffer coat, snow boots, mittens, wool socks, a long scarf, and a hat.
2. Cozy up your home.
If you’re struggling to enjoy the winter wonderland while your nose is turning into an icicle, stay in and get cozy at home. All those fleece blankets, furry cushions, Christmas throws, funny slippers, and large colorful mugs really make a difference. Create a comfortable ambience by placing scented candles in your bedroom and living room, lighting a fire in your fireplace or turning on an extra heater, and decorating your house with winter flower arrangements, Christmas lights, or a wreath.
3. Indulge in your favorite foods and drinks.
Your body needs more energy during the freezing cold days. Don’t reproach yourself for eating more carbs than usual or for indulging in your cravings. Pamper yourself with hot beverages, savory soups, and aromatic stews.
Must-try winter beverages for your inspo:
• hot chocolate;
• Indian masala chai;
• herbal tea;
• homemade cranberry mulled wine;
• gingerbread latte.
Comfort soups ideas:
• baked potato soup;
• roasted carrot ginger soup;
• Thai green curry soup;
• chickpea soup;
• fish stew.
4. Try fun winter activities.
Winter sports can help you love winter. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you’ll love downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snow tubing. If you’re aiming for a more relaxed pastime, take up ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or ice fishing.
5. Bring back the magic of childhood.
Do you remember how you felt about winter back in your childhood? We bet you didn’t hate it. Winter seemed much more enjoyable when we were kids. Perhaps because we associate winter with car problems, freezing temperatures, and all sorts of inconveniences. Try approaching winter as a child and doing things you used to love. For example, build a snowman or a snow fortress, drink hot cocoa after walking in the snow, or invite friends for a pajama party.
6. Binge on your to-watch list.
Winter is the season when you can watch TV all weekend long without feeling bad about wasting nice sunny days. Get cozy under your blankets and watch all the movies and shows from your to-watch list
Our favorite romantic winter movies:
• The Holiday (2006);
• How To Be Single (2016);
• The Family Man (2000);
• Love, Actually (2003);
• Four Christmases (2008).
7. Take up a new hobby.
If it’s hard for you to get sloppy and you’re used to doing something, take up a hobby or learn something new. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try yoga or learn Italian. Maybe playing the guitar is your lifelong dream. Cultivate new habits and fill your days with happy emotions.
These tips might not be a quick fix for you if you’ve always hated winter, but at least they can help you embrace this cold season and chip away at your hatred. Try to rediscover the magic of winter simply by doing the things you love and creating a cozy atmosphere with your own hands. Winter is not that dreadful if you stay positive and keep it simple.
